52 Ancestors: Week 7, Joannes (Benerink) (Overes) Gebben

Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

My 4th great-grandparents Johannes Gebben, later Kempers, and Berendina olde Oosterik were married in Losser, Overijssel, Netherlands 22 January 1818.1 The record names them as "Jannes Gebben [or] Oosterik", age 36, and "Berdina Olde Oosterik", age 27. He was from the area of Binnenveld in the village of Groot Agelo which is about 7 miles from her home in De Lutte. While the marriage records each of their parents, identifying Johannes' ancestry ultimately proved somewhat tricky due the continuously changing farm names used by his father.

The marriage supplements provide a great deal of additional information about the couple.2,3 Although, out of order, each of the documents is numbered. Documents 1, 3, and 6 provide details about Johannes. The first document is his extracted baptism record transcribed in Dutch. As they were Catholic, the original record is in Latin.4 The baptism in Ootmarsum on 8 January 1782 records "gemini Joannes et Lambertus filius Joannis et Aleidis Gebbe" (twins, Joannes and Lambertus, sons of Joannis and Aleidis Gebbe).

As Johannes' parents were deceased at the time, and no deaths or burials were recorded for either, the third document is the testimony of several people who knew them as to the dates of their deaths. His father "Jan Gebbe" is stated to have died 14 years prior (about 1804) while his mother "Aleida Kempers" died 12 years prior (about 1806).

The sixth document is Johannes' National Militia certificate from 1817 which names him as "Jan Oosterik" born in Ootmarsum 8 January 1782, son of Jan and Aleida Gebben. Ootmarsum was the municipality to which Groot Agelo belonged at the time. It also describes his features such as his dark brown hair, gray eyes, pointy chin, low forehead, and height of "5 voet, 5 1/2 duim" (5 feet 5 1/2 inches).5 The other features are recorded as ordinary.

A search of the Catholic church records of Ootmarsum yielded his parent's marriage and the baptisms of two additional siblings.6 On 20 May 1778, his parents "Joannes Overes" and "Aleidis Gebben" were married.7 The first of their children recorded is the baptism of "Herminia filia Joannis et Aleidis in Gebbenhuis in Binnenvelt" on 10 August 1780.8 Binnenveld, though later part of Groot Agelo, was typically recorded separately in church and other records from the time. It is the same location Johannes Gebben was living at the time of his marriage in 1818. The other child, baptized 18 October 1787, was "Gerardus Filius Jo[ann]is et Aleijdis Kemperink ex Binnenveld."9

Like his brother's marriage supplements, Gerardus, or Gerrit, Kemperink's marriage supplements include testimony as to his parents' deaths.10 His father "Jan Kemperink" is stated to have died about 20 years prior (about 1801) while his mother "Aleida Kemperink" died about 19 years prior (about 1802). The testimony also names Gerardus' grandparents. His paternal grandfather is recorded as "Lambert Vogelsank uit oude Overes in Weerselo" with the grandmother's name unknown. His maternal grandparents are called "Herman Zweers op Kemperink" and "Aleida Kemperink." His grandfather Lambert Vogelsank's residence on the Overes estate confirms the accuracy of the 1778 marriage where Gerardus' father has the surname "Overes." This also aligns with their marriage in the Dutch Reformed Church in Tubbergen on 24 May 1778 in which they are recorded with their patronymics as "Jan Lammers uit Weerselo" and "Ale Hermsen uit het Binnenveld onder Ootmarsum."11

With his origins on the Overes estate in Weerselo uncovered, a search was conducted of the church records of Rossum where many from Weerselo attended. The following entries for Lambert Overes' children were discovered.12,6

[1753, February 5] baptizatus est Gerardus cujus pater Lambertus int olde Ooveres Weersel mater Gesina Kolkhuijs suscepit Susanna olde Benerink.13

[1757] 3 Aprilis baptizata e[st] Swenneken cuj[u]s pater Lambert int olde Overes ex Weerselo, et mater Geese Kolckhuis, patrini Jan int olde Tie et Ale Kolckhuis.14

One additional baptism was discovered in the church records of Deurningen and Saasveld.18

[1755] 25 Febr. baptizata Euphemia filia Lamberti et Gisbertae uyt't olde Overes, susc. Gerardus Kolkhuijs et Gisberta in't olde Beneerninck. in Weerselo, extra Com.

Upon further search by his wife's name, one earlier entry was uncovered.

[1751 February] 20 baptizatus est Joannes cujus pater Lambertus int olde Beneerink in Lemsel mater Gesina Kolkhuijs Lutte suscepit Joan Kolkhuijs.19

Thus, Lambert appears to have originated from the Benerink estate in Lemselo and removed to the Overes estate in Weerselo with his wife by 1753. This would explain two appearances of the Benerink surname amongst his children's godparents. This "Joannes int olde Beneerink" is certainly the later "Joannes Overes" who married in 1778.
