Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks
John Booth, son of John and Elizabeth (_____) Booth, was born in London, England 6 December 17911,2 and died in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah 19 February 1874.3,4 He married first in Norton le Moors, Staffordshire, England 16 July 1810, Elizabeth Davis,2,5 daughter of William and Ann (_____) Davis. She was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, England 23 October 17936 and died in St. Louis, Missouri 4 July 1849.7 He married second in Iowa about 1850, Catherine Hunt. He married third in Salt Lake City 19 April 1852, Mary Perrin.8 He married fourth, Elizabeth (Allen) Dunn.
John was baptized at St. Marylebone in London on Christmas Day 1791.1 He would eventually go to Staffordshire, perhaps where his family originated. There he would marry Elizabeth Davis and have several children in Burslem. About 1830, they would move to Reading, Berkshire, and by 1834 they were in St. Luke's Parish, Middlesex (now part of Greater London). John was a clockmaker. In 1841, he is recorded as such on the census for St. Luke's with his wife and three children (Sarah, Esther, and Nathaniel).9 He was baptized as a Latter-day Saint that year on 13 September 1841.10
In 1849, the Ladder-day Saints would begin their journey to Utah. John Booth's journal gives a near day-by-day account of the trip aboard the Henry Ware. They departed Liverpool on 5 February 1849 and arrived in New Orleans 9 April 1849.2,11 From there, they made there way up the Mississippi River to St. Louis and then to Kanesville, Pottawattamie County, Iowa (now Council Bluffs), arriving 25 May 1849.2 In July 1849, his wife and three of his sons died.10 He remarried by 1850 Catherine Hunt, a fellow Henry Ware passenger, with whom we find him in the census for Pottawattamie County along with his youngest son Nathaniel.12
John joined his son William Booth in the James W. Cummings Company which departed for Utah Territory 1 July 1851. Catherine would not survive the journey; she died in Nebraska Territory 18 August 1851 after a period of illness. The company would arrive in Salt Lake City 7 October 1851.13,14,15 He married Mary Perrin a few months later in Salt Lake City 19 April 1852.8 John would remain there for the rest of his life, and we find him on the 1860 and 1870 censuses for the city's 10th Ward.16,17 He would marry a fourth time to Elizabeth (Allen) Dunn; she is recorded with him in these final two censuses.
