52 Ancestors: Week 44, Noah B. and Meneme (Waggoner) Crouch

Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

Noah B. Crouch, probably son of Charles and Rebecca (Attaway) Crouch, was born in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky about 18251 and died probably in Jackson Township, Sullivan County, Missouri 10 August 1870.2 He was buried in Sullivan County.3 He married in Moultrie County, Illinois 26 January 1849, Meneme "Winnie" Waggoner,4 daughter of Isaac and Nancy (Smith) Waggoner. She was born in Shelby (now Moultrie) County, Illinois about 10 March 1831 and died of heart failure at the home of their son James Dallas Crouch in Eureka Precinct, Jefferson County, Nebraska 8 May 1901.5,6 She was buried at Alexandria Cemetery in Alexandria, Thayer County, Nebraska.7 She married second at her home in Sullivan County, Missouri 29 June 1877, Isaac Miller Easley.8 He was born in Indiana in March 1835 and died near Pollock, Sullivan County, Missouri in February 1909.9

A year after their marriage, Noah and Meneme were recorded in Moultrie County, Illinois in the 1850 census.10 His probable parents Charles and Rebecca Crouch are recorded in the household directly above.

On 3 September 1858, Noah "of the Town of Laclede County of Linn and State of Missouri" purchased lots 21 and 22 in Laclede from Thomas Owen.11 On 23 December 1858, Noah purchased lot 26 in Laclede from James M. Clark.12 On 11 February 1859, Noah and Meneme sold lot 26 to George B. Roush.13 On 17 September 1859, Noah purchased lot 37 in Laclede from James M. Clark which he sold to George H. Tracy just two months later .14 On 26 September 1859, Noah and Meneme sold lots 21 and 22 to Samuel Moore.15 That same day, they sold lot 58 to Henry Wheelbarger.16

By 1860, "Say" and "Mena" were in Missouri in Yellow Creek Township, Chariton County.17 Despite the discrepancy in names, the details of the household matches.

Noah enlisted as a private in Company I of the 44th Missouri Infantry in Wintersville, Missouri on 25 August 1864. He resided in Jackson Township, Sullivan County and recorded his occupation as a miller. Elsewhere in the cards, he was called a farmer as he was in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He was described as 5 foot 9 inches tall with black hair, black eyes, and a dark complexion. The unit participated in the Franklin–Nashville Campaign from fall 1864 to spring 1865. He received a disability discharge in St. Louis 15 May 1865 because of "chronic diarrhea and general debility." He had been sick in the hospital in New Orleans since 11 March 1865.1,18,19

On 13 August 1868, Noah evidently mortgaged a property from DeCalb Eastwood.20 On 8 June 1870, Noah B. and Meneme Crouch sold 2 acres in Sullivan County to Henry Waggoner.21 Two months later, on 10 August 1870, Noah died. His widow and children were recorded in the census just a few weeks later in Jackson Township.22 In 1877, Meneme remarried music teacher Isaac Easley with whom she resided in 1880.23 Having gone blind as child, Isaac attended Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and became a musician and teacher.9 By 1900, however, Meneme and Isaac appear to have separated. Isaac was still in Missouri with his daughter's family.24 Meneme was living with her son James Dallas Crouch in Eureka Precinct, Jefferson County, Nebraska, and she was recorded as widowed.25 She died there the following year. Notably, her tombstone records her name with the surname Crouch instead of Easley.7 The notice of her death in the newspaper makes no mention of Isaac either even though he was still alive.6
