Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks
James Cram, son of James and Dorcas (Woodman) Cram, was born probably in Montville, Lincoln County, Maine (now Waldo County) in March 1825 and died probably in Burt County, Nebraska after the census was taken on 7 June 1900.1 He married say 1846, Lousia Bailey, daughter of Thomas Turner and Harriet (Turner) Bailey. She was born in Pittston, Kennebec County, Massachusetts (now Maine) 13 February 1815 and died in Nebraska 5 January 1886.2
After a few years in Trenton, Washington County, Wisconsin, James and his family returned to Montville, Maine where they resided in 1850.3 On 21 December 1855, Thomas W. Slip sold he and his father lots 30 and 13 (each containing 80 acres) of the Portland Academy Grant (incorporated as Bridgewater in 1858) in Aroostook County, Maine, respectively.4 He was recorded there in the 1860 census.5 The agricultural schedule for the census indicates that only 15 of the 80 acres were improved and that he had 1 horse, 3 milk cows, 1 other cattle, and 1 swine. He also had various quantities of wheat, Indian corn, oats, peas and beans, Irish potatoes, buckwheat, butter, and hay.6 He was recorded again in Bridgewater when he registered for the draft in June 1863.7 On 1 October 1863, he purchased 160 acres bordering lot 30 from Enoch Steeves8 which he subsequently sold to Enoch's wife, Emma, on 29 September 1864.9 On 3 June 1865, he purchased lot 13 from his father.10 He sold lot 30 to George W. Collins on 19 May 186511 and lot 13 to him on 22 November 1867.12
The family moved to Washington County, Nebraska in February 186813 and are recorded in Grant Precinct in 1870.14 He had a farm of 80 acres, of which 60 were improved. He also had 3 horses, 1 milk cow, and 1 other cattle as well as various amounts of spring wheat, Indian corn, Irish potatoes, butter, and hay.15 James' daughter Harriet was married at his home in Herman, Washington County, Nebraska in 1879. Strangely, her mother's name was recorded as "unknown to officiant."16 He was recorded there in the 1880 census with his wife Louisa and son James, listed below the households of his son Charles and daughter Mary.17 He rented 15 acres, all of which were planted with Indian corn. He owned 2 horses, 2 milk cows, 10 swine, and 70 poultry.18 After Louisa's death in 1885, James moved in with their son Thomas. He was recorded in his household in Bell Creek, Burt County in 1885.19 As noted above, he last appeared in Thomas' household in the 1900 census in Riverside Precinct, Burt County.1
