52 Ancestors: Week 4, Hendrick ter Binckhorst

Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

This week's post is follow-up on that from week two about Gerdt ter Binckhorst. The rights to reside on the Binkhorst farm would be inherited by his eldest son Hendrick. As discussed in the previous post, they were not land owners but rather serfs. Although, by that time, a predominantly Calvinist country, Catholicism was still prevalent in several Dutch provinces such as Overijssel which was formerly part of the Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht. The Binkhorst family was Catholic, and their farm was owned by the Catholic Church like many of the estates in the region.

After Hendrick, the farm would pass down to his eldest son Gerrit who married Geertken Molthof in 1711.1 His younger sons (from whom I descend), Jan and Hermen, would move to the estates where their wives' resided. Gerrit and Jan are both known from a 1695 deed detailing the serfs residing on the Binkhorst estate.1 Jan would marry Fenneken Benneker, also from De Lutte, on 22 March 1722 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Oldenzaal.2 It should be noted that marriages performed by the Catholic Church were not recognized by the Dutch government, so before civil registrations existed, Catholics were required to be married in the Dutch Reformed Church as well. Two months later, on 13 May 1722, Jan obtained a vrijbrief ("letter of freedom") which allowed him to leave the Binkhorst estate.1 Jan was buried 28 April 1736.3 In the 1748 census, his widow resided on the Benneker farm in De Lutte with her second husband, 5 children, and a servant.4

The youngest son Hermen is presumed to be Hendrik's son based on his marriage. The intention for his marriage with Janna van't Scholtenhuis was recorded in Oldenzaal 5 June 1724.5 They were married in Tubbergen, the bride's residence, but the date of the marriage is not recorded. Hermen is recorded as "Harmen van de Binkhorst . . . uit De Lutte" meaning he resided on the Binkhorst farm in De Lutte. As there is nothing to indicate it was a later marriage, the date fits to make him the the son of Hendrick. He is presumably the "Schulte" with a wife Janna residing in Fleringen, a village neighboring Tubbergen, in the 1748 census.6 The census frequently abbreviates or omits the given names of the heads of households.
