52 Ancestors: Week 20, Kemperink Family of Het Binnenveld (Groot Agelo)

Orginal post: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks

I would like to thank Willem and Yvette Hoitink from the Genealogy Discord for their help understanding the context and more nuanced terminology of the records discussed below as well as general tips for researching families in eastern Overijssel.

Previously, we saw that Aleida "Ale" Kemperink alias Gebben was the daughter of Hermen Zweers and Aleida Kemperink. A search of Frank Steggink's transcription of the church records of Ootmarsum yielded only one possible marriage for her parents.1

[1744] den 2. dito [Februarius] Jan Swiers Wedr. met Ale Kamperink J: d: [?] beijde uijt het Binnevelt. getroden [?] 16. dito.2

An earlier marriage record confirms this is Hermen Sweers. In his first marriage, his name is recorded as Jan Harmsen in the Reformed church, but the matching Catholic marriage entry records him as Hermen Sweers.3,4

We also saw previously that Hermen Sweers and Ale Kemperink and their children also used the name Gebben. In the 1748 census of Overijssel, the households of "Hermen in Gebbenhuijs" and "Lucas Kemperinck" are recorded in Het Binnenveld (part of Groot Agelo). Hermen's household included Ale, an old mother, and three children under 10 years of age (Jan, Ale, and Geertruit). Lucas was living with his wife Willemken.5 Although the page does not specify Het Binnenveld, the names are consistent with those living there as recorded in the church records.

Ale's parentage is presumed from her marriage record and proximity to her proposed father in the 1748 census. In her marriage in 1744, she is called "Ale Kamperink . . . uijt het Binnenvelt." In the eastern parts of Overijssel, farm names were the most common form of surname. Thus in this case, she is Ale from the Kamperink farm in Het Binnenveld.

She is certainly the Ale, wife of Hermen in Gebbenhuis, in the 1748 census. Lucas Kemperinck, who was listed two households down with no children in his household, was born in 1692, making him the correct age to be her father. Only four of Lucas' children were identified in the baptismal records; there is no matching entry for Ale, but baptismal records are inconsistent for this period. There is the possibility that Ale was only living at the Kemperink farm temporarily at the time of her marriage, but this seems unlikely. The marriage record indicates it was her first marriage, so she was likely living with her parents at the time. Additionally, the godmother of her first child was Eva Kemperink, undoubtedly the daughter of Lucas Kemperink who was baptized 13 November 1721. As aunts and uncles were typically godparents, it further supports Ale's father being Lucas.

Genealogical Summary

1. Berent Kemperink was born perhaps in Reutum say 1647. He married first in Ootmarsum 13 March 1672, Beerte Harmsz.6 He married second in Ootmarsum 19 October 1683, Fenneken Vreerkink.7 He married third in Ootmarsum 30 January 1689, Mette Bourkamp.8

Berent and Mette were still living 16 July 1725 when they and their son and heir, Lucas, took a loan of 350 guilders to be repaid with 4% annual interest from Elisabeth Velthuijs. The loan was taken to repay a previous loan from Dr. Hieter in 1720. The loan included their house and farmlands in Het Binnenveld as collateral.9 They previously took out a loan of 150 guilders on 18 July 1712.10

The terminology such as erfvolger [heir] in the aforementioned court records indicates that they were most likely serfs, a practice which persisted in eastern Overijssel until French occupation in 1795. The Kemperink farm was among the properties of the convent in Weerselo (although secularized since the end of the Eighty Years' War).11 Along with their house and farmlands, the court documents mention a katerstede which was a newer farm not entitled to a share in the commons. As serfs' rent was fixed, some managed to save enough money to purchase their own farms as inflation rose. Perhaps they were re-financing this farm or mortgaging it in order to obtain the loan. The need for the loan was possibly a response to the economic stagnation the Netherlands started to experience at the beginning of the 18th century.12

  20. She was still living 26 January 1746 when she was recorded as the godmother of Ale Kemperink, who was probably her niece. No matching entries are found in either the Catholic or Reformed marriage records in Ootmarsum. Furthermore, she does not appear in the 1748 census, so perhaps she died by then.
