Henry Dennis, son of William and Jane (Lewis?) Dennis, was born probably in Guernsey County, Ohio 20 February 1812 and died in Jackson Township, Sullivan County, Missouri 25 August 1877.1 He married in Muskingum County, Ohio 7 January 1834, Barbara Ann Hammond,2 daughter of Zoeth and Mary (Shaklee) Hammond. She was born probably in Muskingum County, Ohio 15 September 1816 and died in Jackson Township, Sullivan County, Missouri 8 April 1882.3 They were buried at Holliday Cemetery in the town of Pollock which lies within Jackson Township.

On 7 November 1835, Henry resided in Guernsey County, Ohio.4 On 29 September 1838, Henry and David Dennis sold 129 acres in Muskingum County, Ohio to their father-in-law Zoeth Hammond.5 He resided in Muskingum County until 1840 when, on 18 June, he purchased 80 acres in Ward Township, Athens County, Ohio (the township would be transferred to Hocking County in 1850)6. In 1850, he resided in Ward Township with his wife Barbara, their six children, and a laborer William Arnold.7 Earlier that year, he sold land in Guernsey County to his brother David Dennis.8

Henry patented three 40 acre tracts in sections 29 and 30 of township 64, range 19 in Sullivan County, Missouri on 10 October 1859.9 One of these tracts was purchased 28 September 1857.10 In 1860, Henry, resided in Sullivan County, Missouri with his wife Barbara and seven of their children.11 In 1861, he and Barbara sold one of the 40 acre tracts to George Abanatha.12

Henry and his family moved north to Wapello County, Iowa during the Civil War as indicated by a deed from 1863 in which he sold another of the 40 acre tracts to Susan Dennis.13 His sons Gabriel and Benjamin's military records give the county as their respective places of residence, and his daughter Caroline and her husband moved to Iowa around this time as well. By 1870, he returned to Sullivan County, Missouri where he was residing in Jackson Township with his wife Barbara and two youngest sons.14
